Giant Eland
The largest antelope in the world, the giant eland confirms that big is indeed beautiful. In our experience, these behemoths are also amongst the most shy species we seek out on our safaris. Found across the sahel, from arid savanna to the fringes of dense rainforest, this is very much one of our favourites here at Pictus Safaris. Here are our top three destinations for giant eland sightings.
1. Bouba-Ndjida National Park, Cameroon
Other species seen here:
- Lion
- Leopard
- Kordofan Giraffe
- Bush Elephant
- Korrigum

2. Niokolo-Koba National Park, Senegal
Niokolo-Koba is our absolute favourite destination at Pictus Safaris. Just a (long) stone's throw from the tourist beaches of the Canary Islands, this savanna reserve is home to some of West Africa's last lions, leopards, wild dogs, elephant and giant eland - a must visit!
Other species seen here:
- African Wild Dog
- Lion
- Leopard
- Chimpanzee
- Gambian Mongoose

3. Chinko Nature Reserve, C.A.R.
Possibly the most exciting emerging safari destination in Africa right now, Chinko offers both dense rainforest and open savanna. This, in turn, allows it to play host to an incredible array of species from many different biomes. Visiting is still very tricky indeed, and navigating the reserve is only possible by boat and helicopter, but the rewards can be staggering.
Other species seen here:
- Bongo
- African Golden Cat
- African Wild Dog
- Giant Pangolin
- Lion

Sightings of giant eland here, provided you visit the right area in the dry season, are practically guaranteed. Part of the Benoue Complex in Northern Cameroon, this delightful reserve is a stronghold for a number of species deeply threatened across the Sahel, making it well worth a visit.
