Cheetah
Elegant and strikingly beautiful, it is no wonder that cheetah are such a favourite with so many nature lovers. Sadly, their numbers have fallen precipitously over the last few decades, and sightings are now restricted to relatively few protected areas on the continent - here are our three top spots for cheetah sightings in Africa.
1. Serengeti, Tanzania
Other species seen here:
- Lion
- Leopard
- Black Rhino
- Serval
- Bush Elephant

2. Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
Just across the border from the Serengeti sits the smaller Masai Mara NR - and the game-viewing is every bit as good here as it is in Tanzania. All of the 'Big Five' are well represented, and smaller rarities including serval, aardvark and aardwolf are seen often. The Great Migration, complete with incredible river crossings, only adds to the spectacle. The cheetah viewing can be stunning, and coalitions hunting topi and wildebeest make for great photographs.

3. Etosha National Park, Namibia
Namibia has the highest population of cheetah of any country in Africa, but many visitors struggle to locate one during their visit. This is largely because most cheetah here roam freely across vast tracts of privately-owned land, usually in the north and centre of the country. However, there is a high density of cheetah in the eastern half of the famous Etosha National Park which also offers fantastic lion, elephant and rhino viewing.

- Leopard
- Bush Elephant
- Brown Hyena

It is no secret that the Serengeti is one of the premier safari destinations in Africa. Offering excellent viewing of all of the 'Big Five', as well as the seasonal wonder that is the Great Migration, this is the perfect destination for a safari first-timer or an experienced traveller. The cheetah viewing is simply superb, and it's not uncommon to see several different cats on a single drive - a must visit for cheetah-lovers!
